Do you have a school story to share?

I was in the MS Marching Band but no geek here. We had an incredible mentor and leader in Mr. Barnette. He taught us pride, confidence and poise. He impressed upon us how important our job was to further school spirit. There were many afternoons on the practice field when the football team came storming down the hill and yet Mr. Barnette said we had the field for our allotted time and he would not budge. I was lucky in my time in the band to go from 12th trumpet player all the way to #1, Solo Trumpeter. He has had a lifetime impression on me and looking back I feel like our band back then brought prestige and notoriety to Mark Smith. Of course other memories are when we beat Lanier and when the basketball team won the championship. No middle schools back then either. That made the 8th and 9th grades a challenge to say the least. But it was the people who made that school great- both teachers and students. The diversity of talent that emerged during those years was amazing. A truly unforgettable experience. I was also in that small clique of rebels who were among Macon's first hippies. And I thought I looked great with my Jerry Garcia/Rosanna Dana long hair. I didn't. It's rare that a guy can have good long hair. I remember Lynn Kitchens came close but at least no one was covered in tatoos. I mean when I "grew up" I promptly cut my hair. But how do you scrape off all those tattooes. I'm thinking that process will be a good bit more painful than a simple haircut.

What is your favorite Mark Smith/Lasseter memory?

Playing the National Anthem at football games, going for that high note at the end of that song- AND HITTING IT. If you notice at sporting events, even Superbowls, no one goes for that high note. Mariah Carey could get it. So could Barbara Streisand. But no one even tries anymore. Also the Lanier game was memorable.

Who were some of your favorite teachers?

Of course, Mr. Barnette was my favorite. Great mentor.
Mr. English
Mr. Meeks- great leader
Coach Clifton

Comments:

Hmmm...lots. Life does that to you. Takes you here and there. You lose all sense of time until you get to be our age. Then you look back and are kinda astounded by all that you did or lived through.

Lived in Georgia, Arkansas, Florida, Montana (my fave), California (the state where if you spend any amount of time you learn that "it's better to look good than to feel good," ha, ha,) Colorado, Arizona.

Spent most of my time marketing healthcare. Would have preferred to have spend my time writing. Passion of mine.

Still play tennis.

Single, currently in Colorado Springs, within eyesight of the Air Force Academy....

Don't know about you but Mark Smith seems like a previous life, it's so far back. But of course my memories are still vivid- the track, baseball field (that had no shade whatsoever), the gym, library, band room. Coach Clifton as a teacher, Mr. English's pocket hankies, the football gane when we beat Lanier, state basketball journey. My daughter says "Dad, you're in the late innings. Are you ahead?" My stock answer is "yes, I'm ahead, and wait 'til you see who I have warming up in the bullpen." Have a great birthday. It's ok to keep one foot in past, recalling the good times, and one foot in the future. There's plenty of game left for both of us.
