George William DuPree

Juliette, GA- George William DuPree, 63, of Juliette, died at home on Saturday.
He was born in Macon, and graduated from Stratford Academy and Mercer University. He was employed by Georgia Power as a biologist, and, subsequently graduated from Coast Guard Officer Candidate School and became a commissioned officer. He served in the United States Coast Guard with distinction and retired as a Commander. During his Coast Guard career he served as Operations Officer in Search and Rescue in Detroit, Michigan; Diving Officer and Navigator on the USCGC Glacier; Commanding officer of the USCGC Point Brower; Officer of the Search and Rescue Center, Cleveland, Ohio; Commanding Officer of the USCGC Nantucket (Puerto Rico); Coast Guard Headquarters, Washington, D.C.; Executive Officer on the USCGC Polar Star; and Program Manager of the Ice Breaking Program in Washington, D.C.


Following his retirement from the Coast Guard, George became an accomplished blacksmith at this Hickory Hill forge. He was an enthusiastic member of the Ocmulgee Blacksmith Guild. For many years he enjoyed summers at St. Simons Island boating and crabbing.


He is survived by his wife of forty years, Susan Andrews DuPree; a son, Matthew George DuPree of Atlanta; a daughter, Margaret Anne DuPree of Washington, D.C.; sisters, Margaret Anne Carswell (George), Nancy DuPree (Rob Rodatus), and Donna Valbuena (Joe); and a brother, John Thomas DuPree .
