Jim Mitchell (1970)

Ronnie "Bulldog" Nelson was a complete individual... a "one of a kind".  He was a very accomplished athlete and had a "can do" attitude.  He was one of the most refreshing people I ever met.

We talked a lot in class and gym and he teased me a lot about being so quiet.... because he was certainly not! He was outspoken and sort of an Oliver Twist type person.  He always wanted more!  and he deserved it!

I am not sure what happened that fateful night when he died.  I am sure that it would be difficult to deal with him when he was angry, as he had no fear and stood up for his rights.  I wish it had turned out differently.  A lot of people were scared of Bulldog, but deep down he was as sweet as a baby.

HIs kids should be proud of his legacy, but they may never know what he ean to us.  It would be hard for young folks to understand what Ronnie and other pioneers from Appling went through.  He will always be a Mark Smith Bulldog and I will always remember him wearing his Letterman jacket like a Sunday suit!

Go Bulldog!
